The back room of the Othello’s palace is the only place that Desdemona is able to escape her jealous lover and claim her own independence. In creating the space, we sought to establish an environment that can only be understood by its inhabitants. Others looking in are constantly misinterpreting, just as Othello believes that Desdemona is being unfaithful. We chose to incorporate frames covered in cloth to establish the boundaries of the space, a material that one cannot clearly see through. Vogel chooses to incorporate accents to distinguish class, and the costumes sought to further that divide. From Desdemona, dressed in elegant silks, to Emilia in her rough natural fabrics, to Bianca, wearing her finest for her meeting with Desdemona, we see a clear distinction between the characters.
